Skin cancer is described as the unusual growth of skin cells which occurs when the skin is always exposed to the sun. The three main kinds of skin cancer are the following:
- Basal Cell Carcinoma
This type of cancer would usually manifest in the most exposed parts of the body such as the face or neck. The common appearance of this type of cancer is when you see a brown or flesh-colored lesion which resembles that of a scar. Another manifestation of basal cell carcinoma is the presence of a waxy or pearly bump.
Melanoma can actually develop in any part of the body. The appearance of melanoma in men would usually be on the face or trunk while it will appear on the lower legs for women who may be affected. The presence of melanoma will appear under the fingernails or toenails, soles or palms for people who have darker skin tones. The signs of melanoma include any significant changes in the mole, dark lesions on the affected areas, and a small lesion with irregular border that may have tinges of blue, blue-black, red or white. Another sign or melanoma is the presence of a big brown spot with dark speckles.
- Squamous Cell Carcinoma
This type of cancer will often appear in the more exposed areas of the body such as the ears, face and hands. People who have a darker skin tone are more susceptible to develop this type of skin cancer even to the areas of the body which are not exposed to the sun.
